She took the requisite shot at the Trumps but raised eyebrows when she went after Melania for some very petty things.
She trashed her for bringing her a gift when they visited before the inauguration claiming it was a breach in protocol and threw her for a loop in front of the cameras.
As if Melania would know the protocol anyway and why she didn’t Michelle tell her Melania if it was such a big deal?
It is understandable I suppose with the entire world watching one gets flustered – but to go out in public and trash Melania for it was a bit much.
But then a video of Laura Bush and Michelle surfaced that exposed Michelle as a fraud. She did the same thing.
And Laura Bush didn’t act all flustered or go out later and trash her for it. No, Laura handled the situation with elegance and class.
From The Daily Caller: Obama also added she felt uncomfortable during the exchange because it wasn't protocoled for the moment.
“Well, there’s all this protocol. I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here,” Obama recalled. “Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, ‘Okay, what am I supposed to do with this gift?”
“I was like, what do you do with the box?” the former first lady added.
But after Obama brought up the viral gift exchange again on Tuesday with Fallon, CNN White House reporter Kate Bennett pointed out Obama did the same thing at the same event in 2009, when she and her husband greeted former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush on the steps of the White House.
“It was sort of a rude thing to say, I thought; Melania Trump was just trying to be nice; she didn’t need to make fun of her for it. But whatever,” Bennett wrote in her newsletter.

Also on the show, she pulled a face when discussing the moment Melania Trump awkwardly gave her a gift at the inauguration.
Melania had given her Tiffany’s box containing a ‘lovely frame’ – which she received in front of the cameras, pulling a face indicating it had caught her off guard.
After a few seconds of not knowing what to do with the gift, Barack took it from her and gave it to a member of staff.
Describing her final moments as the First Lady, Obama said: ‘A lot was going on that day.
‘Right before that, my daughters’ friends decided they needed a sleepover for the last day. I was like: “are you guys kidding me?”
‘And then there was Tiffany’s box,’ she said, referring to the gift that Melania Trump gave her, causing momentary awkwardness as she wasn’t sure what to do with it. ‘It was a lot.’
‘So, there was that and then there was Tiffany’s box. ‘It was just a lot.’
